The Past - Biarritz Café Budapest
It was in 1938 that Kálmán Tihaméry - our ancestor - opened the elegant Biarritz café on the bank of the Danube. The title of “the most modern café-bar,” created quite a stir with its cutting edge interior decoration elements. Béla Radics and his band elevated the atmosphere; the bright, enormous mirrors expanded the sense of roominess. Guests sitting on the Pest side were treated to a fantastic view: as they chatted and entertained themselves, they viewed the sights of Buda until sunset, when the lights were lit on the other side of the river. Finally, on May 10, 1948, Café Biarritz – representing one of the venues of the bourgeoisie way of life – closed its doors.
Novadays - Biarritz Restaurant & Café Budapest
In 1995, Biarritz restaurant and café reopened – although in a more modest guise – on the other side of the building that was owned by the former Bauxit Rt. (Bauxit Corporation). It once again caused a great stir with its rebirth. Not with its size, but simply with its presence, its fresh perspective, its charming, bourgeoisie atmosphere. In addition to evoking memories of pre-war café atmosphere in Budapest, it created the world of expensive, modestly elegant little French-style bistros. Good quality, delicious, simple foods are available in French bistros, meals that are not affordable to all. Today we have proved also to our Hungarian guests that we are once again able to provide hospitality service at a high level of quality. We would like to expand our clientele; therefore we would like to please them in various ways.
